Welcome to the Young Green Army

About the Young Green Army

The Young Green Army is a flagship youth environmental and leadership program established by Mpenda Mazingira Initiative CBO to empower children and young people to become informed, responsible, and active stewards of the environment. The initiative was developed following research and community observations that identified significant gaps in environmental education, youth leadership, climate awareness, and meaningful youth participation in environmental conservation.

The research revealed that many environmental programs focused primarily on activities such as tree planting and clean-up exercises without providing adequate environmental education, mentorship, or leadership development. Although these activities were beneficial, many young people participated without understanding the science behind climate change, biodiversity, ecosystem restoration, or the long-term importance of environmental stewardship.

It was also observed that many school environmental clubs lacked structured learning programs, leadership development, and continuous engagement. Environmental activities were often organized as one-time events with little follow-up, reducing their long-term impact. In addition, many young people had limited opportunities to participate in environmental decision-making or to develop practical leadership skills that would enable them to become environmental champions within their schools and communities.

In response to these challenges, Mpenda Mazingira Initiative CBO established the Young Green Army as a structured movement that combines environmental education, mentorship, leadership development, and practical conservation activities. The program seeks to transform young people from participants in environmental activities into knowledgeable leaders who can influence positive environmental change throughout their lives.
