Greening Churches

Come to where growing of trees in this mother land begun

On International Youth Day 2022, Mpenda Mazingira Initiative launched its first-ever Greening Churches Day at PCEA Milele Church, Nairobi. The event brought together 300 enthusiastic youths from diverse denominations, united by a shared vision to care for creation and promote environmental stewardship within faith communities.

During the day, the participants planted 500 trees across the church grounds, transforming the space into a vibrant green sanctuary that symbolizes hope, growth, and community responsibility. The initiative was supported by PCEA and the Kiambati Foundation, highlighting the power of collaboration between churches and environmental organizations.

The youth engaged not only in planting but also in discussions on climate action, sustainable practices, and the importance of indigenous trees. Their energy and dedication demonstrated that faith-based spaces can be catalysts for environmental change, inspiring congregations and local communities to embrace sustainability.

The success of this first Greening Churches Day set the foundation for a growing movement, showing how youth-led initiatives, combined with church leadership and strategic partnerships, can create lasting impact. These 500 trees continue to grow as living symbols of hope, reminding all that caring for the environment is both a spiritual and community responsibility.

Looking Ahead

Following this milestone, Mpenda Mazingira Initiative aims to expand the Greening Churches program to other faith communities, nurturing a nationwide culture of ecological stewardship, one church at a time.

Faith in Action Greening Our Churches

At Mpenda Mazingira Initiative, we believe that caring for creation is a shared spiritual responsibility. Through our Greening Churches program, faith communities and youth come together to plant trees, nurture the environment, and inspire sustainable practices. From church grounds to community spaces, these initiatives demonstrate how faith, leadership, and environmental stewardship can grow hand in hand with one tree, one church and one youth at a time.

Youth Lead Environmental Change at PCEA Macedonia, Rongai

In 2023, Mpenda Mazingira Initiative continued its Greening Churches Day initiative during the Youth Tuko Conference at PCEA Macedonia Church, Rongai. The call for action came from Rev. Antony Mirigu, Head Youth Pastor and founder of Green It Initiative, inspiring youth to lead environmental stewardship in faith communities.

On this day, 125 passionate youth joined hands with 7 local pastors representing 6 churches to plant 200 avocado trees around the church grounds. These trees will provide shade, food, and green space for worshippers and the community, serving as living symbols of hope, growth, and care for creation.

Beyond planting, participants engaged in discussions on climate action, sustainable practices, and the importance of nurturing indigenous trees. The activity empowered youth to become environmental ambassadors within their congregations, demonstrating that faith communities can be at the forefront of ecological responsibility.

The active involvement of pastors reinforced the spiritual significance of environmental care, showing that protecting creation is both a community and faith-based responsibility. Collaboration between youth, church leaders, and environmental organizations highlighted the transformative impact of combining spiritual guidance with tangible action.

Looking Ahead

Building on the momentum from 2022, Mpenda Mazingira Initiative plans to expand the Greening Churches Day program to more faith communities across Kenya. Each event strengthens the message that environmental stewardship and faith can walk hand in hand, cultivating greener, healthier communities for generations to come.
