Abel Ondigi Nyakundi is the Founder of Mpenda Mazingira Initiative (MMI), a youth-led community organization committed to environmental conservation, climate education, and youth empowerment in Kenya. Driven by a strong belief that young people can be powerful agents of change, Abel founded the initiative to create opportunities for youth and communities to actively participate in restoring the environment while building sustainable livelihoods.
Abel is a certified Environmental Consultant in Kenya with practical experience in community-based conservation, environmental awareness, and climate education programs. Through his leadership and technical support, MMI has worked with schools, youth groups, and local communities to promote environmental stewardship through tree growing, environmental education, community clean-ups, and youth mentorship programs. These initiatives aim to empower young people with knowledge, leadership skills, and a sense of responsibility toward protecting natural ecosystems.
In his early leadership journey, Abel served as the first Children’s Assembly President, where he represented the voices of young people and championed youth participation in community development and decision-making processes. This experience shaped his commitment to leadership, advocacy, and community service.
Abel also has training in computer programs and digital skills, which he uses to strengthen organizational systems, documentation, and communication for community-based initiatives. In addition, he is a Co-Founder of Kijana Imara Initiative, where he provides technical assistance in program coordination, digital communication, and project documentation to support youth empowerment efforts.
Through his work, Abel continues to champion practical climate solutions and youth-led action, believing that empowering young people with knowledge, opportunities, and leadership skills is key to building resilient communities and a sustainable future.
